It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for "What’s in the Attic with Jim?"
Today, we take a stroll down memory lane…well, Pollock Street to be precise! This great photo from the Historical Society’s collection dates back to 1914 and has you looking east down Pollock Street. On the left it’s easy to spot the Athens Theatre and Café, the Elks Temple Building on the corner, and City Hall in the distance. Chugging along the road is a railcar from the New Bern-Ghent Street Railway Company. The company began operations in 1913 from various points in New Bern, including the new Union Station, to the newly developed Ghent Neighborhood. The street railway operated from 1913 to 1929, and sections of that track still remain today in the brick crosswalks in front of the New Bern Civic Theatre and Tryon Palace.
Next time you’re on a downtown stroll, take an extra step back in time to imagine New Bern during its boom and travelling around by train! Comment below with what you've uncovered!
