Creaky Floors & Popcorn Smells

Wednesday already!? It sure feels like we time-travel around here, but it’s always a joy to discover “What’s in the Attic with Jim?”

Our Curator, Jim, recently uncovered this photo and we’re thrilled to share a historical view looking North-West across Middle Street where the five-and-dime store McLellan’s used to be. Built in 1927, McLellan’s operated through the 1980s with the popular format of offering a wide variety of low-priced merchandise until the chain stores and shopping malls took over. McLellan’s competed alongside other national variety stores such as McCrory’s, Kress & Co., and Woolworth’s. This building was eventually torn down in 2006 and is now the garden and green space of the First Baptist Church. Next time you exit the Birthplace of Pepsi Store, enjoy a stroll through the grounds where McLellan’s once stood and imagine the sounds of creaky floors and smells of popcorn! We’d love to hear your memories, and auto enthusiasts, help us identify what’s parked out front!
