It’s Wednesday - time for "What’s in the Attic with Jim?"
Last week our Curator, Jim, came across this beautifully preserved check from 1882. Aside from admiring the pristine condition and wonderful penmanship, Jim was able to make some fascinating historical connections based on the names. Alexander Miller lived at what is now 415 Broad Street, which at the time was his three-story dwelling and “Variety Store” where he sold “dress goods, linens, groceries, patent medicines, glassware, and hardware.” The check is made out to Miss H. Lane (Harriet), who went by the nickname “Hattie” because she owned a Millinery (Women’s Hat Shop) on Pollock Street. The possibilities are endless as to what the $5.00 check was for, but that amount is the equivalent of about $147 at today’s rate! Can you make any other connections?
