The self-guided tour gives you the chance to see the interiors of very special homes in the Downtown and Ghent Historic Districts not normally open to the public\, ranging from glorious to tiny\, from 19th century to restorations in progress. \n These are livable family homes with rich stories and diverse architecture that illustrates New Bern’s amazing history.  Add creative floral arrangements\, live music\, gardens in bloom\, artists\, and historical churches to the mix for an unforgettable tour! \n \nPlease pick up your paper ticket at the New Bern Historical Society Office at 511 Broad Street. Paper tickets will be available starting March 20th and will also be available the days of the event at the Will Call tent. \nPaper tickets are required to attend.

You will hear real stories of soldiers injured in the war on both sides. Local reenactors from the 7th and 5th NC Regiments will be alongside our own actors to show you what a field hospital would have been like. \nNot a battlefield tour or a program about the war\, these are poignant human stories of the experiences of civilians\, soldiers\, formerly-enslaved persons\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Into the Burning Sea – The Greatest Coast Guard Rescue in American History\nPresented by Kevin DuffusFebruary 18\, 2024 at 2:00pmat Orringer Auditorium\nThe British tanker\, Mirlo\, loaded with nearly 300\,000 gallons of aviation fuel was 5 miles east of the Outer Banks village of Rodanthe on August 16\, 1918\, when it was torpedoed. Duffus describes the unimaginable ordeal endured by six courageous Coast Guardsmen in a small motor lifeboat as they imperiled their own lives by entering a hellish and deadly inferno of explosions and toxic fumes and navigating a confusing maze of swirling black smoke to rescue strangers in distress. It was a day when American lifesaving history was made. In an emotional “coda” to the Mirlo story\, three years after his book was published Duffus received an amazing letter from a woman in England named Mirlo\, the granddaughter of the third officer of the tanker whose personal eyewitness account in a series of letters revealed a previously unknown and astonishing perspective of the catastrophe. When Duffus reads the heart-wrenching letters of the British sailor and his granddaughter\, the lessons of history and the true essence of the lifesavers’ legacy becomes evident. \n \nBe sure to check your spam folder for your “Event Reservation” email!

Roper Lumber CompanyPresented by Bill BarberFebruary 7\, 2024 at 11:30amat Carolina Colours Pavilion\nBill Barber will provide an account of the timber boom that swept across coastal North Carolina following the Civil War. This green gold rush brought thousands of speculators\, lumbermen\, railroaders\, watermen\, and loggers to exploit the untapped timber resources of the vast swampy wilderness. With sawmills came boom towns\, employment for thousands of local inhabitants\, and the first industry in many of the coastal counties. The John L. Roper Lumber Company was only one of the many lumber mills that operated during that era\, but it led the way in building railroads\, organizing the lumbermen from three states into the North Carolina Pine Association\, and rebranding what had been considered an inferior product into lumber that dominated the market as “North Carolina Pine.” Roper’s timber empire spread from Norfolk\, Virginia\, to Jacksonville\, North Carolina\, and turned Norfolk into the leading lumber market on the East Coast. \n  \nBe sure to check your spam folder for the “Events Reservation Details” email!
