DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson \nSeptember 13th\, 2026 at Orringer Auditorium\, Craven Community College \nPresentation begins at 2pm \nTickets on sale NOW!  \n \nHARLOWE\, Craven County – It’s a little known but important piece of American history: black soldiers fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. It’s estimated that 5\,000 black soldiers served on the Patriot side during the Revolution\, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. Fourteen free men of color from the Harlowe community of Havelock fought in key battles of the war\, with General George Washington leading the fight for independence. Join the New Bern Historical Society as they host Dr. Valerie Johnson as she shares this important story from local history on Sunday\, September 13\, 2026 at 2pm at Orringer Auditorium at Craven Community College.  Learn about these 14 brave men and the folks that discovered their story and the families that are still here. \nReservations are highly recommended as this event should sell out; $10 for Historical Society members\, active duty military\, and students; also $10 for non-members. James H. Craig\, with his British forces\, captured the town of Wilmington. His mission was to establish a supply base for Lt. Gen. Charles Cornwallis’s army as they continued their southern campaign into North Carolina. Major Craig’s most notable military expedition was his punitive raid that began on August 1\, 1781\, when he left Wilmington and headed to Duplin County. From there\, he led his troops toward New Bern\, skirmishing along the way with militia. In this program\, Dennis Harper and Stacey Jones will discuss Craig’s activities over 10 months of occupation of Wilmington\, NC which includes 5 skirmishes in Jones County\, the ransacking of New Bern in Craven County\, the deaths of Capt. John Gordon and Dr. Alexander Gaston and much more. \nPrepaid reservations required. Cost is $25 for Historical Society members\, and $28 for nonmembers\, which includes a buffet meal format. With thousands of U.S. Marines calling ENC home\, we get to tie their mission of strategic maneuverability back to the Civil War days right here on the Neuse River in 1862. With the development of the surf boats and the availability of appropriate landing zones\, Commander Rowan executed one of the first joint operations that featured ship to shore movement covered by reinforcing fire from the ships. Hear more about this innovative approach and how these decisions set the stage for continuous Union occupation of New Bern throughout the remainder of the Civil War. \nPrepaid reservations required. Roper Lumber CompanyPresented by Bill BarberFebruary 7\, 2024 at 11:30amat Carolina Colours Pavilion\nBill Barber will provide an account of the timber boom that swept across coastal North Carolina following the Civil War. This green gold rush brought thousands of speculators\, lumbermen\, railroaders\, watermen\, and loggers to exploit the untapped timber resources of the vast swampy wilderness. With sawmills came boom towns\, employment for thousands of local inhabitants\, and the first industry in many of the coastal counties. The John L. Roper Lumber Company was only one of the many lumber mills that operated during that era\, but it led the way in building railroads\, organizing the lumbermen from three states into the North Carolina Pine Association\, and rebranding what had been considered an inferior product into lumber that dominated the market as “North Carolina Pine.” Roper’s timber empire spread from Norfolk\, Virginia\, to Jacksonville\, North Carolina\, and turned Norfolk into the leading lumber market on the East Coast. \n  \nBe sure to check your spam folder for the “Events Reservation Details” email!
