About Ghostwalk 2009, The Roaring and Sizzling 20′s
Kick up your heels and spend three evenings in the 1920’s as the New Bern Historical Society takes you back in time to The Roaring & Sizzling 20’s! This year’s theme sizzles with excitement as it spotlights local and national characters from that era and remembers the Great Fire of 1922. While visiting downtown historic sites, buildings, churches and homes you will encounter ghosts with spirited tales of New Bern’s Jazz Age. Sites expecting hauntings include Cedar Grove Cemetery, the old firehouse, the Firemen’s Museum, Pinnix Drug Store, the grounds of the old library and many of our historic district homes!
Cedar Grove Cemetery, a Ghostwalk favorite, will host spirits who experienced the Great Fire of 1922. If you dare pass under Cedar Grove’s spooky gates you will first meet the cemetery’s infamous grave diggers (who will try to convince to stay for awhile). If you manage to get passed them, be on the lookout for ghostly characters! You could run into a few who made Cedar Grove their temporary home after the fire. There might even be a spirit or two still sleeping there!
An annual crowd pleaser, especially for the young at heart, is Agony Alley. This year Agony Alley is having a 1920′s style birthday bash. Come join the party in New Bern’s own Mystery Mansion, complete with flappers! There will be lots of fun, music and entertainment! Be sure to check out Agony Alley, located on the grounds of the Attmore-Oliver House.
New Bern’s two historic theatres are opening their doors for Ghostwalk. The Athens Theatre will present a musical review From Gatsby to Grease, performing songs from the 1920’s to the 1950’s. The Masonic Theatre will present Flappers and Flicks. Twenties style dances, performed by the Margaret Fletcher Dance Studio, will be followed by a return to the era of silent movies. Remember, the first “talkie” didn’t come along until the late 1920’s!
Remember ghosts can’t get wet so Ghostwalk goes on rain or shine!!!
